What is it?
A mock-up is a diagnostic procedure simulating the future smile of a patient undergoing smile reconstruction. It gives the patient the opportunity to see the new shape their teeth will take before the beginning of the treatment, and the dentist to make corrections if needed.
It can also be used as a form of treatment itself, in those cases where VDO-vertical dimension of occlusion, or other complex prosthetic procedures are indicated.
There is the possibility for the mock-up to remain intraorally for some days, in order for the patients to familiarize themselves with their new smile and check how it impacts important factors such as speech and mastication.

When is it recommended?
Unfortunately, a mock- up is not recommended in every case. If the patient’s teeth are too crooked and in cases with convergence issues, a mock-up is not applicable from the onset. It is only possible after the teeth have been prepared and this automatically becomes the temporary state the patient’s mouth will be until the finalization of the prosthetic procedure. At that stage, changes can be made according to the patient’s wishes. In such cases, there is a possibility that orthodontic treatment may be required before the procedure in order to guarantee the best possible result.
