Endodontic treatment is an operation using microtools to the interior of the tooth, in cases of infection or necrosis of its pulp (the pulp cavity containing its nerves and vessels), in order to avoid extraction. During endodontic treatment the damaged or necrotic pulp is removed, the root canal is sterilized and filled with an elastic material(gutta-percha) to avoid bacterial recontamination.

When is endodontic treatment advised:

  • When dental decay is to such close proximity to the pulp that its removal leads to exposition of the pulp.

  • When a tooth is broken and its fracture is located close to, or on the pulp.

  • When a tooth is damaged resulting in its necrosis.

  • In cases of abscess, intense swelling or pain, etc.

Symptoms:

Symptoms range from intense pain and swelling to no symptoms altogether.

Duration of treatment:

Endodontic treatment lasts commonly one to two conferences. It is a painless procedure, since local anesthesia is applied. There is the possibility of pain in the time period between the conferences, it is however very manageable with mild analgesics.
