A sparkling white smile contributes a lot to a person’s charm and self confidence. Unfortunately, daily habits such as the consumption of coffee, tea, smoking and pigments found in our daily nutrition lead to the discoloration and darkening of the hue. This condition is most effectively treated through teeth whitening, it being a fast, immediate, conservative and controlled procedure.

There are three different approaches to teeth whitening:

  • At the clinic, using a whitening agent (hydrogen hyperoxide ≈40%), activated by a LED device which can also be used to increase its effect.

  • At home, using specialized, personalized mouth trays.

  • A combination of the two techniques consisting of treatments both at the clinic and at home. It is most recommended to reach the best possible result.

The Procedure:

The first step is an examination of the oral cavity, since the treatment of any issues such as dental calculus or plaque must take place before teeth whitening can begin. Colour samples are then taken through intraoral photographic display, and the dental traces which will be sent to an odontotechnic laboratory for the construction of custom-made mouth trays are implemented.

The procedure itself starts at the second consultation, using whitening agents activated by LED lamps. After the procedure, the placement of the mouth trays is tested and detailed instructions for their use are given.

After ten to fifteen days, the patient is re-examined to evaluate the results.

After-effects

Teeth whitening is a completely safe procedure, as long as its implementation protocol is observed and the doctor’s instructions are followed explicitly.

Some sensitivity of the teeth is a common after-effect, which gradually recedes after a few days.

The duration of the procedure’s results varies, depending on factors such as smoking, oral hygiene, or the consumption of products containing pigments.

In some cases, teeth whitening is not advised. Children under the age of 14, pregnant or nursing women, patients with extremely vulnerable teeth, patients having undergone prosthetic reconstruction, and patients with hyperoxide allergies should not undergo the procedure.
